Less than three week away from the January 3rd Iowa Caucus, the editorial board from states most influential newspaper, The Des Moines Register’s has endorsed Republican Sen. John McCain and Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton for the 2008 Iowa Presidential caucuses.
Iowa’s statewide newspaper, calls McCain and Clinton the candidates it believes are most competent and ready to lead. Both McCain and Clinton are on the ballot for Michigan’s January 15th Primary.
The overall theme for both endorsements was that American government is broken and that America desires competence in its leader to rebuild trust between the American people and their government again.
In a statement released late Saturday evening, the editorial board cited two qualities that influenced their choices: “With dissension at home and distrust abroad, as American troops continue to fight wars on two fronts, the times call for two essential qualities in the next American president, the Register’s editorial board concluded. Those qualities became the paramount considerations in making endorsements for the Democratic and Republican nominees in the 2008 Iowa caucuses.”
In 2004, the Des Moines Register endorsement helped move John Edwards from being mid-pack and single digits in polling to a strong second place showing to eventual nominee John Kerry at the Caucuses.
