Tech Tuesday – 11-Dec-07 Edition

By LoRayne Apo-Joynt | 12.11.07 | 11:06 am

Here’s a Tech Tuesday offering for our technology savvy Michigan Messenger readers:

  • Happy Patch Day to you, Happy Patch Day to you…
    Today is Patch Tuesday, when Microsoft conducts a monthly push of its accumulated patches to Microsoft users. This month’s push tentatively includes 6 “bulletins” or patches for Windows, and another “bulletin” for Internet Explorer, in order to fix known vulnerabilities or improve operations. Patch push begins at 10 a.m. PST – that’s 1 p.m. Michigan time.
  • Nag, nag, nag: unlicensed users of Microsoft will be nagged
    Instead of being locked out of functions (which might encourage users to migrate to Linux), users will be nagged if they are using unlicensed versions of Microsoft Vista. This “feature” is scheduled to be installed on machines using Vista during January 2008 Patch Day push.
  • Corporate “suits” create “Blogging Council”, forget key ingredient: bloggers
    A group of corporations including Cisco, Microsoft, Nokia, Dell, and Coca-Cola have formed a private organization to discuss brand development and best practices using blogs. If you’re a blogger, your eyes are already rolling back into your head at this lameness. Don’t you wonder who sold management at these companies on this boondoggle? You can check out their site at blogcouncil.org — and no, they don’t take comments.

  • OpenOffice version 2.3.1 now available
    A new version of free open source office suite OpenOffice is now available at their site.  While this version does not offer any new features, it does patch a known vulnerability. V.2.3.1 will be available until the release of V.2.4 in March 2008; V.2.4 is expected to have a number of new features.
  • On your mark, get set, code! Sun offers $1M prize for open source innovation
    Sun sez: “Sun is pleased to announce a $1 Million Open Source Community Innovation Awards Program which will foster innovation and recognize the most interesting initiatives within open source communities worldwide. Beginning in mid-January 2008, Sun and the six open source communities will announce details on how developers can participate in the individual programs. Each community will have its own contest rules and judging criteria. ”
  • Google releases new Chart application
    Nuts! don’t you wish you had a data set handy to try out this new toy from Google? Go on, you know you want to try it! This is going to come in very handy with polling data in advance of the primaries, or when showing your spouse that you are comparatively all set for socks and underwear this Christmas, but understocked on iPod or MP3 devices.
  • And since it’s Tech Tuesday, we remind you to do the following:
    - run your anti-virus program and anti-spyware;
    - check programs for updates and patches;
    - make sure you’ve run a good backup recently.
