Employment virtually unchanged in October

The Department of Labor’s Employment Situation Report is out this morning and it shows the jobs outlook for October was virtually unchanged. The economy added 80,000 jobs, far below what is needed, but the unemployment rate did drop slightly to nine percent.

Economist Bill McBride writes that the employment numbers were slightly below what was forecasted and called it a “weak report,” but also noted that “the underlying data was a little more encouraging (with emphasis on ‘little’).” But at the end of the day, he said, “There are a total of 13.9 million Americans unemployed and 5.9 million have been unemployed for more than 6 months. Very grim.”
