Groups target DTE over rate hikes, pollution and shut-offs

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 10.31.11 | 2:18 pm

The Sierra Club, the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization and members of Occupy Detroit are planning to gather at DTE Energy’s downtown office tomorrow for a demonstration against the company’s coal-fired power plants and its practice of shutting off utilities when people can’t pay.

In statement today the groups said:

Over 100 Detroit residents will march at DTE headquarters Tuesday to demand clean and affordable energy for all. On October 20, Michigan Public Service Commission approved a $174 million rate increase for DTE on the eve of another cold winter, putting more families at risk of shutoff. This continues DTE’s investment in 19th century technology when energy efficiency and renewable energy are now cost competitive with coal, and can create green jobs for Detroit. March participants are demanding DTE to stop the shutoffs and transition to clean energy sources to protect communities from adverse economic and health effects of heavy reliance on fossil fuels.

DTE’s Monroe coal plant produces more than a quarter of Michigan’s total CO2 emissions, according to a report by the Environmental Integrity Project.

According to the Michigan Public Service Commission, DTE shut-off utilities 138,629 times in the first 8 months of this year.
