Student activists arrested during sit-in of MSU president’s office

Three Michigan State University students were arrested Thursday evening for refusing to leave the administration building offices of President Lou Anna K. Simon.

The students, members of university’s student group Greenpeace, began a sit-in at Simon’s office at 3 p.m. Thursday to protest the continued use of the T.B. Simon coal plant on campus. Protesters say the coal plant is the largest coal-fired power plant on a campus in the country. They say it is a health hazard and dangerous for the environment and want it phased out quickly and replaced with renewable energy sources.

The State News reports the three arrested students are social science and international studies sophomore Peter Rustad, linguistics and philosophy sophomore Adam Liter and zoology junior Kendra Majewski.

“Over the last two years, the University has met our demands for clean energy with indifference. So today, I am risking arrest to show how serious we are. The university must protect the health of its students, and set us on a path to 100% clean energy. We deserve clean air, respect from the administration, and a voice in our future,” said Liter.
