Traverse City hospital tells employees get flu shot or get fired

By Todd A. Heywood | 08.30.11 | 3:21 pm

Munson Healthcare has issued an ultimatum to its employees: Get the flu vaccine by Dec. 31 or lose your job.

The Associated Press reports Medical Center chief operating officer Kathleen McManus is pushing the issue because voluntary vaccination at the health system has never topped 65 percent.

“The people we serve here are very sick,” McManus said. “And I will not put a patient at risk.”

The flu is caused by a virus which can wreak havoc in patients with immune problems, the elderly and the very young.

But employees are pushing back on the mandate, the AP reports.

“I have a really hard time believing I’m going to be forced to do something against my will,” said nursing administrator Dianne Lopez-Wild, who works in an office. “It’s like something out of a sci-fi movie. It’s bizarre to me. It seems so unreal.”

And while employees might believe they are in a civil rights battle, the Courts have long held that mandatory vaccinations were acceptable. The question in this situation, however, is whether or not mandatory vaccination is acceptable without a concurrent outbreak of disease.

Firing is a little harsh considering the value of a good nurse. However, it is part of the profession to serve and protect sick people. Having a flue shot is a proven act which prevents illness and improves employee attendance at work. Have to admit though on some years, depending on the mix, I sometimes actually get a mild sickness after getting the shots.

Please show me the stats that back up your statement, “Having a flue shot is a proven act which prevents illness and improves employee attendance at work.”

There arent any because they dont exsist. FYI Hospitals recieve 100$ for every employee that is vacinated. I doubt this is some type of govenment mass murder plot. However I do strongly believe this is all about money, big government, and that really big pharmacy business that almost every american is dependent on. What is happening to our country and our civil rights. makes me want to get the hell out of dodge.

This is no big govt plot. FLU shots save lives and the facts are supported by the years that responsible use of FLU shots has keep americans healthier through flu season. I worked long enough in health care to understand that vaccinations do make people healthier. It is no different than requiring them to have their HEP C shots to keep them safe from transferral of blood. VIRUSes travel faster and hit people at the most vulnerable.

    Carman,

You’ve not answer Josh. He ask for stats, not your obedient programed talking point that came off of a pharmaceutical brochure. The fact is, many in this country to not trust people like you that have ONLY been exposed to “approved” information.

The UN Agenda 21 plot or for pure profit are simply opinions of motive, not evidence of ineffectiveness or personal risk.If that is the kind of information you want then check out Dr. Tenpenny at http://www.drtenpenny.com
