Tar sands marketers focus on womens’ lib

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 08.30.11 | 12:17 pm

Promoters of Canadian tar sands oil have launched a media campaign around the idea that by replacing Saudi oil with Canadian crude the U.S. can reduce payments to a government that oppresses women.

“Last year we bought over 400 million barrels of oil from Saudi Arabia,” states an ad that launched on the Oprah Winfrey Network this week. “We bankrolled a regime that doesn’t allow women to drive.”

Speaking from Washington DC where he is supporting a civil disobedience campaign aimed at stopping approval of a new tar sands oil pipeline Rainforest Action Network spokesman Daniel Kessler said that linking womens’ rights to use of tar sands oil is “preposterous”.

“The people in the Middle East are taking care of those issues themselves.” he said. “We just saw the Arab Spring.”

“The idea that using tar sands oil is more ethical than using oil from the Middle East is ridiculous,” he said. “We need to be cutting our emissions period.”

Kessler said that much of the oil that would be transported via the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to refineries on the Gulf will be earmarked for export and may end up in China.

According to the U.S. State Dept. greenhouse gas emissions associated with tar sands oil from the Keystone pipeline would equal the annual greenhouse gas emissions from the combustion of fuels in 588,000 to 4,061,000 passenger vehicles.

We are being throttled by the effects of global warming and noone wants to comment on this unholy plan.

Seriously? Global warming is a myth that has been disproved countless times. If you want to know what is causing the earth to warm, try looking up at the giant, flaming nuclear furnace in the sky.

I am surprised OWN is allowing this bull to be ran.  Then again, I do see the bull hydrofracking commercials playing on some networks.  I find it irritating the fact these corporations can put millions into trying to fool the masses through advertising, yet fight every inch of the way about spending to protect the environment and stay up on regulations regarding contamination and pollution.  The uneducated fall for these ads hook, line, and sinker.

Amen! And with this tar sands money grab. they are trying to pull in support from women by saying we are helping oppression in Saudia Arabia. Huh?

We don’t want your dirty dirty tar sands!  Let the women of Saudi Arabia fight for their rights and put their country in order.  Buying those tar sands will not change those women’s situation.  Does anyone really think Saudi Arabia is going to give their women more rights because the USA bought tars sands from Canada?  This is so laughable.  Those tar sand promoters are so stupid!

With all the carbon creating contrivences in constant use, cars, boats, planes lawn mowers, air conditioners, cloths dryers, hair dryers, leaf blowers, snowmobiles, computers, oil rigs, electric knives and conservative climate change dening blowhards etc. etc,  it seems almost quaint to blame the sun for climate change, and yet most of course find the sun unacceptable as a  reliable alternative source of energy.

Like my professor says, “Whether you believe in global warming or not, it is best to keep pollution and toxic emissions as low as possible for the health of our citizens and our environment.”  Straight up common sense, yet deniers chose to be on the reckless road of denial.
