Benishek: ‘Oil companies pay their fair share’

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 08.26.11 | 3:27 pm

The League of Conservation Voters is criticizing Rep. Dan Benishek (R-Crystal Falls) for his recent claim that the heavily-subsidized oil industry pays enough in taxes.

At a public forum in Petoskey this week Benisek said that while it’s important to close tax loopholes, he feels that oil companies pay enough.

“(Democrats) talk about raising the taxes on the oil companies. I think oil companies pay their fair share,” Benishek said, according to the Petoskey News-Review. “I can understand where the oil company wants to deduct the cost of drilling a well. That’s one of the tax breaks for oil companies — the subsidies — they get to deduct the cost of the well the year you drill.”

The Michigan League of Conservation Voters says that Benishek’s views on the reasonableness of oil company tax breaks, and his voting record, are inspired by contributions from oil companies.

The group said that Benishek accepted $11,000 in campaign contributions from oil and gas companies in the first six months of the year.

“Stating that ‘oil companies pay their fair share’ as they get billions in unnecessary tax breaks is, unfortunately, only saying out loud how he actually votes back in Washington,” Michigan League of Conservation Voters Political Director Ryan Werder said in a statement. “He voted six times to protect tax breaks for his donors in the oil industry and then cast another 45 votes against the programs and funding that keep Michigan’s air breathable and our water safe.”

Benishek did not respond to a request for comment on LCV’s concerns.

Congress has rejected moves to end oil company subsidies despite a Congressional Research Service report that indicated that closing some of them would save $21 billion without affecting gas prices.

It’s truly pathetic that a ploitician, like Rep. Benishek, can sell themelves so cheaply. In this unseemly political enviroment, an honest politician that actually works for his/her constituents, could easily get twice that much money at a local spaghetti luncheon.

I wonder if Mr Benishek can offer any proof to the validity of his statement .

    Probably not .

     Where’s the “shared sacrifice” ?

Congressman Benishek is walking the plank!  Jobs for Michigan #1 priority, but at what cost sir?  Big Business and Small Business is absolute for a healthy Michigan, agreed; but we have Gov. Snyder saying “DRIC” (New Bridge to Canada ) yet he cannot hear the people say “Ambassador is good for Michigan Taxpayers”, you too must hear the people trying to communicate “Their” wishes for you to carry through.  “Enough is Enough Dan”, we must keep you in this seat next election, but you must be willing to hear and take some direction from your voters! As must our Governor in his decisions. We work to gain new positions in opposition seats, not surrender those so hard earned. Yours too! Dan, T-Party are not Terrorists nor Hairy Footed creatures, that is disrespectful.
We do I hope agree that the U.S.Constitution, and the Mi.Constitution is a document, not just something to pull out and wave to get a cool breeze! In this oil and Drilling, remember you are a protector as well as a “Job Seeker” for Michigan. Please come sit with Antrim GOP and have a discussion? ObamaCara is not a cave in, it is to sick to exist!. Jobs we do need, but be fair in those choices. Are there no green job thoughts for the UP? The open space and waters edge? Windmills? Geotherm? Solar? Perhaps when talking to the oil and gas opportunities ask for a return of something else as a partner option! Use it or lose it so they say. Worth a try? Sure, it has to be pressure has to go 2 ways.
