I am writing today to announce the closure of the Michigan Messenger. After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Durant to enter primary to challenge Stabenow

By Ed Brayton | 08.17.11 | 7:32 am

Clark Durant, founder of a Detroit charter school, is set to announce that he will run against former Rep. Pete Hoekstra in the Republican primary for the chance to challenge Sen. Debbie Stabenow for her seat next year.

MLive.com reports:

Detroit charter school co-founder Clark Durant confirmed Tuesday that he intends to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by Democrat Debbie Stabenow.

Clarke, speaking this morning with WJR-AM 760 host Paul W. Smith, said he will file paperwork “very shortly” to launch his campaign for the Republican nomination.

“We’re going to do an announcement in Detroit,” he said. “Because Detroit has been the heartbeat of this state and, frankly, the heartbeat of our country.”

The National Journal asks what Durant’s chances are against Hoekstra, who has far more name recognition, in the primary. Just last week three former Michigan GOP leaders — Betsy DeVos, Saul Anuzis and Spencer Abraham — endorsed Durant over Hoekstra in a public letter.

But Hoekstra is a much bigger name than Durant and has years in Congress with favors built up to be repaid.

Stabenow is a fantastic representative for the STATE OF MI, one that is capable, intelligent and appreciates what govt is really supposed to do for the people of her state. She will withstand this challenge. I have a feeling, the political atmosphere in MI is not going to be so friendly to the TBAGGERS who want to rebuild AMERICA into their own image of: Multiple fiefdoms, oligarchal, unequal, evangelical societies where the workers pay taxes to support a govt that favors the rich, undermines public education and can’t deliver on fire and safety services. MI is the poster child for what could happen to DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA, should these new extreme republican policies continue to prevail.

You really need to get a new photo of Sen. Stabenow. It’s not the first time it’s been used on this site, and it’s quite unflattering. I don’t suspect any intention behind the photo, but regardless, there’s much more accurate photos of her out there (or contact her office if you need one).

    Thank you.
