People visiting various locations in Calhoun county, including adult book stores, have been greeted with fliers announcing an outbreak of syphilis in the county. The problem? There isn’t an outbreak, says Kelly Niebel, spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Community Health.
Michigan Messenger received several notifications from people in Calhoun about the notices. Calhoun County Health Department officials did not return calls seeking comment, but Niebel said in an email:
I checked with our folks, and there is no outbreak in Calhoun County. We were working with the county to get out some prevention messages. Apparently, some materials were reused from another campaign that shouldn’t have been. They have since been retrieved and we are reviewing the steps we take when disseminating information so we can avoid this in the future.
Syphilis is a disease that labs and health officials are obligated to report to the state of Michigan.
Syphilis has been making sporadic resurgences across the state in recent years. Michigan Messenger has reported about increases in Ingham, Oakland, Genessee, Kent and Kalamazoo counties.
