Backers of a recall effort targeting Rep. Paul Scott (R-Grand Blanc) say they have supplied state election officials with 12,200 signatures.
That is 2,500 more signatures than was necessary to qualify the recall for the November ballot, reports the Flint Journal. And while the group has turned those signatures into the Lansing election officials Friday, the state has until Sept. 9 to certify the signatures and determine if there are enough valid signatures to result in an actual recall vote.
Backers say they targeted Scott, who chairs the House Education Committee, over his support for education cuts and pension reforms.
The Michigan Education Association also supported the recall.
For his part, Scott says the recall is about the unions and does not represent the voters of his district.
There are more than a dozen recall petitions circulating in the state targeting lawmakers over the budget approved in May, as well as a recall of Gov. Rick Snyder.
