FBI investigating damage to Detroit women’s clinic

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 08.04.11 | 11:33 am

Federal agents are trying to figure out who is responsible for leaving a device that damaged a women’s clinic that provides abortions in Detroit.

The Associated Press reports:

FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said in an email Wednesday that the exterior of the Summit Women’s Center was burned and a window was broken by the object, which officials declined to describe. The package was left outside the clinic sometime between the afternoon of July 16 and the morning of July 18.

FBI officials say this could be a violation of a federal act that makes it a crime to injure, intimidate or interfere with those seeking to obtain or provide reproductive health care services.

The FBI is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the identification and arrest of those involved.

The Summit Women’s Center did not shut down as a result of the incident.

According to the clinic website the center has operated since 1973 and was one of the first in Michigan to offer low-cost abortions.
