Gary Glenn makes it official — he’s in for Senate race

By Todd A. Heywood | 08.03.11 | 12:09 pm

Gary Glenn, the head of the American Family Association of Michigan, has made it official. He will compete in the Republican primary for the nomination to challenge U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow in 2012.

“Federal election law will require me this week to file a formal declaration of candidacy for the U.S. Senate, a combination of having employed ‘mass media’ — my website at garyglenn.us — and raised more than $5,000,” Glenn said in a release.

Glenn will have to overcome the name recognition of former Congressman Pete Hoekstra if he is win the nomination. Hoekstra jumped into the race last month after originally saying he would not run.

While Glenn has built a career in conservative politics from Idaho to Michigan. His anti-gay animus has already put him in the spotlight for one Republican group. The Michigan Log Cabin Republicans issued a statement this week saying Glenn should withdraw.
