Schauer declines to run in 2012

By Todd A. Heywood | 07.27.11 | 12:37 pm

Former 7th Congressional District Rep. Mark Schauer (D-Battle Creek) announced Wednesday he will not run for Congress in 2012.

Schauer’s name has been bandied about since redistricting maps came out that would move Calhoun County from the 7th District, which Schauer represented from 2008-2010, into the 3rd District. The 7th is currently held by Republican Tim Walberg of Tipton and the 3rd is held by Republican Justin Amash of Grand Rapids.

In a statement emailed to the media Wednesday morning, Schauer had this to say:

“Aside from my family, the thing I’m most proud of is the public service work I’ve been a part of in Lansing and in Congress since 1996. Public service is in my blood, and making things better for children, families, communities, and small businesses is what I enjoy most.”

“Having the honor of representing the people of Battle Creek and south central Michigan at such an important time in our nation’s history is more humbling than I can describe. I am especially proud of our work to rescue the nation’s economy and pass historic health care reform that will help fix our broken health care system and strengthen Medicare for future generations.”

“That being said, I have decided not to seek office as a Congressional candidate in 2012.”

“My number one priority will continue to be my wife and our family, especially our three little grandsons. I am also very excited about the public service work I’m currently doing, particularly helping to lead the BlueGreen Alliance Jobs 21! campaign, as well as work on a number of nonprofit and business initiatives to support families and create jobs. I will also continue helping my wife Christine grow her dynamic retail business in our hometown of Battle Creek.”

Schauer said he believes the 7th Congressional district is a seat that Democrats could win in the 2012 election, knocking Walberg out. So far no candidates have committed to running for the seat.
