This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

The reality of GOP tax increases

By Ed Brayton | 07.18.11 | 3:08 pm

Though most of the Republicans elected to the state legislature ran on a platform of completely rejecting tax increases as a means of balancing the Michigan budget, the reality is that they and Gov. Rick Snyder have raised taxes significantly on most residents of the state.

Peter Luke looks at some typical examples:

That’s not likely to console a taxpaying couple making $55,000 who will lose their homestead credit, deductions for their two kids and will pay a higher tax rate in the future than under the old tax law. That’s hardly a unique couple and in 2013 their tax bill will be $739 higher, according to the House Fiscal Agency…

A couple with three children making $110,000, for example, will absorb a tax hit in 2013 of $190, $549 less than the aforementioned couple making half as much.

Or take a retired couple born after 1952 with $53,000 in income and a $4,000 property tax bill. Next year they lose their entire homestead credit and will pay income tax on every dime of their pension. It adds up to a $3,130 tax hit.

Next door a couple, in which the older spouse was born before 1953 but after 1945, also has $48,000 in pension income. And $27,000 in Social Security. They’ll lose some homestead credit as well, but the income tax will apply to only $8,000 of their pension. That’s because the first $40,000 is exempted for their year-of-birth group. Their tax increase is $590…

But consider the financial cost Michigan’s new tax code will have on a married couple with two children making $34,400. With the loss of earned income tax credit, it’s $396.

And those taxes were raised to help offset a $1.6 billion a year tax break for businesses.

Greedy Republicians.  Problem is the people voting them into office can’t read.  It those republician schools all the children are now going too.  Where are the republicians making any sacrifice?

Problem is you can’t spell. By the way what do you mean by “those republican schools the children are now going to”? Did we build new schools recently or were they democrat schools before? Also republicans have made sacrifices, or do you think that only democrats have lost their jobs or pay higher gas and food prices. Or do you think that all seniors are democrats and Rick Snyder and evil republicans targeted them. Fact is businesses don’t pay taxes, we do, they only collect them. We pay those taxes in the form of higher prices for the goods and services that they provide.

I certainly don’t think that all seniors are Democrats, but I do believe that Rick Snyder is evil.

(FYI – Before you start picking on people for spelling errors, you may want to invest in a writing tutor. Every one of your sentences is grammatically incorrect (not to mention the fact that you know nothing about proper comma usage).

After this administration all seniors will be democrats.  Thanks Rick!

“READ MY LIPS, NO NEW TAXES……….on businesses. I’M A NERD AND YOU CAN TRUST ME!!!  (n.e.r.d = new executive republican demigod) HEY, I’M TELLING YOU THAT WE HAVE PROBLEMS AND I WILL FIX THEM WITH JOBS, JOBS, JOBS!…. just not telling you how, but you’ll vote for me because ignorance is bliss.and what you don’t know WILL hurt you. I’m gonna do a job on your freedoms.”
1.8 Billion for businesses and more taxes for the rest of us. Less job security and less liberty for the people that are still suffering from the Repulican backed banking, housing and job fiasco. The only job expansion is in the auto industry. If you recall, almost all GOP members said that they wouldn’t survive, so shut them down now  REMEMBER??? When the heck are normal blue collar workers giong to realize that a Rebulican will NEVER take their side over the rich, Wall Street, Banks or Big Business! NEVER!!!!!!!!

No outrage, no sense of injustice in these comments! The basics are the Republicans lied to the people of MI. And the governor is a dictator. Republicans cannot govern for all the people and are therefore unworthy of our trust and support. The GOVT is supposed to act in the best interests of the people. Did you see how respectful Murdochs were this morning in London? At least in that country, the govt still commands respect from the Billionaire internationalists, who respect no borders. They float on their islands of wealth, emerging from time to time to make more money. In 1985 there were 14 billionaires in the US in 2006 there were 400.  We the people are responsible for allowing Grover Norquist and friends to set the course of this democracy! Are you really ready to live in a TPARTY NATION where taxation is unbalanced, where public school are being privatized, where health care is only available to those who can afford it and only those children born with a silver spoon in their mouths will ever own their own homes or businesses.?? Benton Harbor, MI is the poster child for TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION and yet, Snyder is not being held accountable for stomping on people’s rights. And what kind of people sit back and allow a 2nd generation CEO to threaten the people of Benton Harbor: “if they don’t stop exercising their rights as citizens, and embarrassing his compay, he will move his WHIRLPOOL jobs?? Pardon my punctuation!!

      Well said. Thank you.

Obama has attacked the lower and middle class with tax burdens on most everything you buy.  These Republican tax increases are mere pennies compared to the attack Obama has launched on lower and middle income families.
