Bachmann’s ‘pray the gay away’ problem

By Todd A. Heywood | 07.12.11 | 12:36 pm

GOP Presidential candidate Michele Bachmann and her Christian husband are undergoing increased scrutiny after a weekend report by national gay rights advocacy group Truth Wins Out (TWO).

The TWO report disclosed that the organization had sent employee John Becker into a counseling clinic owned by the Bachmanns. His complaint? He wanted to stop being gay. His counselor then told him that it was possible through prayer and Biblical recitations. This program is referred to as reparative therapy or ex-gay ministry. It is promoted by some fundamentalist Christian and Jewish faith groups as a “cure” for homosexuality. Those who push the counseling say it helps people become the heterosexual version of themselves that God intended them to be.

However, experts in counseling and mental health see the therapy as dangerous. In a 2009 report, The American Psychological Association had this to say about ex-gay therapy:

The limited published literature on these programs suggests that many do not present accurate scientific information regarding same-sex sexual orientations to youth and families, are excessively fear-based and have the potential to increase sexual stigma.

Patrick McAlvey, of Ann Arbor, knows about the dangers of ex-gay therapy first hand. As a 19-year-old he was subjected to the counseling concept by a Christian counselor in the Lansing area. That counselor, McAlvey says, subjected him to humiliation by demanding he rate his attractiveness as well as discuss the size of his genitals. He was also subjected to hour long “hug” therapy sessions with the counselor, himself an ex-gay.

McAlvey told his story to TWO.

“My heart breaks for the victims of Dr. Marcus Bachmann and his clinic’s “ex-gay” therapy. Truth Wins Out’s recent undercover operation proves without a doubt that Bachmann’s clinic is engaged in dangerous ‘ex-gay’ therapies – which have been discredited by every major medical, mental health and psychological professional organization,” McAlvey told Michigan Messenger via email. “I know first-hand how damaging it is to be misled to believe that your sexual orientation can and should change by those posing as experts on the issue.”

McAlvey expressed deep concerns about reports by Michigan Messenger’s sibling publication the Minnesota Independent, that the Bachmanns’ clinic is actually on the receiving end of federal and state monies for their counseling services.

“For years, Minnesotan taxpayers and the federal government have been footing the bill as Dr. Marcus Bachmann and his clinic have engaged patients in dangerous and unethical “ex-gay” therapy,” said McAlvey. “It’s time for the Bachmanns to answer for their actions and explain exactly what they’ve been doing with tax-payer money all this time. If Michele Bachmann is going to use her husband’s clinic as part of her qualification for the highest office in our country, it is shocking and more than a little damning that she has not been willing to discuss the details of what goes on at this clinic.”

Equality Michigan, an LGBT advocacy group, also expressed concern about the Bachmann clinic and “pray the gay away” counseling.

“The Bachmanns have repeatedly stated that they are very proud of the counseling business they created. The family has taken at least $137,000 in federal Medicaid funds to support a family business that claims to counsel gay clients in crisis by deeming them unacceptable and worthy of shame,” said Emily Dievendorf, policy director for Equality Michigan. “This approach can only serve to intensify the severity of cases of depression and suicidal tendencies and should not occur in therapy — much less be funded by taxpayer dollars. As we all become more familiar with the Bachmanns, supporters of equality nationwide only achieve a clearer understanding of the threat that Bachmann leadership poses to our children, families, and communities.”

The Bachmanns and the campaign have declined to discuss the ex-gay therapies offered by the clinic. The issue has been featured on ABC’s Nightline as well as the Today Show on NBC.

Of course, much of the media seems to be operating under the assumption that gays can’t change their orientation.  This is a flat out LIE!  I’ve read success stories of gays who now have happy heterosexual marriages.  Face it, some gays don’t want to be gay.  Don’t impose your viewpoint on them that they can’t change.  That is the ultimate hate crime against them.  Homosexuals are human persons loved by Jesus Christ, who calls them to chastity.  It’s difficult, and compassion should always be present.  We must stand with our gay brothers and sisters to help them if they want to change.  The media is sure good at scare tactics.  Peace to all!

Jared, the fact that there is so much discrimination that few people would CHOOSE to be gay and have to endure the poor treatment that comes with it is one of the best arguments supporting it not being a choice (or something you can change).  The American Psychological Association refuses to consider being gay something that needs to be treated.  If Jesus tells you to love and show compassion you could try ACCEPTANCE.  Kids are skipping school, slipping into deep depressions, and killing themselves all over the country (at least 10 in Michigan since 2001) precisely because they are told they should try to be somebody they aren’t and work to be straight or express themselves within gender norms.

On one side of the spectrum is the 100% opposite sex attraction. On the other spectrum is the 100% same sex attraction. Both are right. Both are valid. Most people are some where in between, within varying degrees. The truly gay, or the truly straight cant even imagine the other side. Those of us who are somewhere in the middle, may be able to marry and love someone that is not usually who they may be attracted to. For the bisexual person looking to change, that person may successfully change. For the truly gay, this kind of therapy is truly harmful to them. The problem with society is so many people just look at things in such a black and white or a right and left point of view. There are all the colors in between. That’s one reason the rainbow is such an awesome representative of gay pride. Just let people be people.

Essentially, those people who believe in conversion therapy see it as a win-win situation.  Either they succeed in brainwashing a homosexual into behaving as a heterosexual, or they succeed in ruining the homosexual’s life, possibly even contributing to a world with one less homosexual via suicide.  They are hateful human beings who manipulate the loving message of Jesus Christ to spread their own discontent and compel others to believe as they do.

If your going to use Christ’s teachings as a basis for your argument then please use all of them. Christ never said that out of love you should encourage someone to disobey God’s commands. With all of the liberal so called progress for the last two decades, why is the world in an increasingly destructive tail spin.

      • Anonymous

The world is not in a “tail spin”.  And if you’re going to use the word ‘liberal’ to explain why you think, in your limited “last two decades”, the world is in a  ”tail spin”, then I would expect you to lay out how anything ‘liberal’ goes against Christ’s teachings.  It is not your place to encourage or discourage someone to obey or disobey what you perceive as God’s commands.  I did not use Christ’s teachings as a basis for my argument; I accused people who believe in conversion therapy of using Christ’s teachings to justify their position.

Well let’s take them one at a time. If the world is not a mess then how do you explain crime/ corruption/ famine/ the horrible economy/and I could go on at length but if you won’t aknowledge the obvious then there is no point. For someone who takes offence at my use of “liberal” you certainly are protective of it. You say it’s not my place  to encourage or discourage the obedience of God’s commands as I perceive them. That is exactly what the Lord calls us to do, except I don’t perceive it, I read it in His word. And it is most definitly appropriate to us Christ’s teachings as they are the only justification for anything we do. I would also like to thank Dr. Bachman for his willingness to help those who are willing. Have a blessed day

All I see in your response is a narrow-minded understanding of the Bible in general, and an arrogance that you alone are reading and correctly perceiving the teachings of Christ.  If you have laid out how anything “liberal” goes against Christ’s teachings, I must have missed it.  In fact, all you’ve managed to do is reflect the very attitude that I was highlighting in my original post.  There is certainly no Christian love lost on your part when it comes to the damage that conversion therapy causes; in fact, you seem proud that trumpeting your understanding of “His word” is at the root of this movement, and confident that Christ has personally told you that you are justified.  Signing off by wishing me to “Have a blessed day” is the height of self-righteousness and insincerity.  I’ll thank you not to be so presumptuous in the future.

Using John Becker as the mole was a bit unfair.  He would rate at
least a 12 out of 10 in temptation. However his counselor did nothing in
the least improper sexually. The counselor, even if he were gay, would
have no risk of being seduced.  He would have a heck of a time getting a
gay date.   I wonder how Mr. Bachmann himself would have behaved on
encountering the stunning Mr. Becker. Bachmann’s accent gives away that
he hung out in the 60s with screaming queens. That does not jibe with
his current story. I would also like to know why there was such a high
turnover of foster children in the Bachmann household. Michelle Bachmann is a deeply evil person. It stands to reason there are some corpses rotting in her personal closet.
