U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow announced Tuesday that federal funding will be made available to Saginaw Bay area farmers to implement water conservation practices.
The funds came from President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors Initiative and amount to $550,000, reports the Bay City News.
In recent years, the Saginaw Bay has seen mucky beaches and poor water quality, believed linked to run off from farms and urban sewer overflows. River bank erosion also carries polluted sediment into the bay.
Farmers have a short window to apply for the funding announced this week, with the application window ending July 22. Some practices eligible for funding include stream bank restoration, filter strips, tree and grass planting, forest management practices and conservation tillage.
