Nearly 10,000 seek tax amnesty with State Treasury

By Todd A. Heywood | 06.28.11 | 1:29 pm

Nearly 10,000 Michigan residents have asked for a tax amnesty deal with the state of Michigan.

MLive.com reports that “roughly 9,200″ people have submitted applications for the amnesty, which ends Thursday. Under the program, designed to recoup money for the state’s flagging budget, people who pay the entire back tax amount as well as any interest due on the back taxes, will have the penalties of their late filings waived.

Officials hoped the amnesty would raise $88 million for the budget.

The amnesty program covers most state taxes prior to the 2010 filing year, including income tax, the sales tax, the Michigan Business Tax and tobacco taxes.

Applications for the amnesty must be post marked Thursday to qualify — and then taxpayers will have to pay off the entire back tax bill and interest to qualify.
