Report: McCain temporarily suspends campaign over financial crisis

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.24.08 | 3:06 pm

John McCain today announced he was suspending his campaign to focus on the financial crisis and asked to reschedule the first debate with Barack Obama currently scheduled for Friday night. The announcement came in New York City, The Hill is reporting.

The report also says McCain, the Republican candidate for president, asked his Democratic rival to join him in attempting to postpone Friday’s national debate.

McCain said he was taking the unusual step of suspending his campaign so that he and Obama, as well as other leaders in the country, could focus on the crisis on Wall Street.

The Obama campaign issued a brief statement this afternoon stating that at 8:30 this morning Obama called McCain and asked the Republican nominee to join him in issuing a joint statement of principles regarding the proposed Wall Street bailout.

According to the statement from the Obama camp, McCain called Obama back at 2:30 p.m. and agreed to participate in the joint statement — which is now being written.
