Detroit sues former Kilpatrick era police monitor

By Sam Inglot | 06.14.11 | 8:35 pm

Adding to the court circus that has been the public life of former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the city is suing former police monitor Sheryl Robinson Wood, reports The Detroit News.

Detroit is suing Wood for 10 million dollars and the case has been moved to federal court.

The city has sued former police monitor Sheryl Robinson Wood, who text messages show had an affair with former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, for more than $10 million in fees she received.

And in a new allegation, the city claims Wood and her former employers submitted fraudulent invoices to the federal court. They prolonged the amount of time it has taken the city to comply with court-ordered reforms of the Detroit Police Department so they could continue to reap millions in fees, the city alleged.

The lawsuit is the latest development in a costly reform effort that has dragged on for eight years, fallen short of targets and generated gossip-column headlines.

The filing also is the latest attempt by the city to recoup fees after text messages revealed a relationship between Kilpatrick and Robinson Wood, who oversaw court-mandated reforms of the Police Department.

The city is also suing Kroll Associates Inc., Saul Ewing LLP and Venable LLP. Lawyers for Wood as well as the firms either declined to comment or could not be reached.
