Saugatuck schools consider adding LGBT positive video to 8th grade sex ed

By Todd A. Heywood | 06.07.11 | 4:56 pm

The Saugatuck Board of Education is considering a controversial proposal to include a video about being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender to its eighth grade sex education curriculum.

The Grand Rapids Press reports that the board is considering adding the film “Coming Out: What Every Teen (Gay and Straight) Needs to Know” to its curriculum. The film was approved by the district’s sex education advisory committee and Principal Tim Travis says it fits the state Department of Education guidelines.

The district only offers sex education in the eighth and ninth grades, the Press reports.

But the proposal is not sitting well with some district parents and adults.

“Many people do not support the gay lifestyle for religious and moral reasons,” said [Brian] Sova, who has two daughters in the district’s elementary and middle schools.

But the proposal was supported by a 3 to 1 ratio in a hearing Monday, and it has earned praise from the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network, or GLSEN.

“GLSEN commends Saugatuck High School for seeking ways to make its sex education class inclusive of the diverse society in which we all live,” says Daryl Presgraves, interim communications director of the group. “Curriculum that includes positive portrayals of LGBT people helps promote respect for all and can improve LGBT students’ school experiences. LGBT students deserve to feel like they are a part of the school community just like every other student.”
