May job growth weak, unemployment jumps

By Ed Brayton | 06.06.11 | 7:20 am

In yet another sign of the weakening recovery, the American economy produced an anemic 54,000 jobs in May — not nearly enough to keep up with population growth — and the unemployment rate increased to 9.1 percent, according to the latest employment report from the Department of Labor.

Perhaps worse, the number of long-term unemployed, which the government defines as those jobless for 27 weeks or more, increased by more than 300,000 and ended at 6.2 million. That’s more than 45 percent of all unemployed Americans.

This was not at all unexpected given the bad news in the government’s economic reports for the past month. New weekly unemployment claims continue to average more than 400,000 per week.
