Federal officials investigate use of weatherization money in Flint

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 05.26.11 | 3:20 pm

Auditors from the U.S. Dept. of Energy and members of the FBI visited Flint City Hall today as part of an investigation into use of a federal grant intended for weatherizing low income homes.

Rick Hass, deputy inspector general for audits and inspections at DOE, told the Flint Journal that investigators will examine the quality of work that is being done, whether the city has adequate controls over expenditures and how city employees paid with grant funding are spending their time.

The FBI has confirmed the presence of agents at City Hall but said that no search warrants were executed.

The Journal reports that at a press conference today city Mayor Dayne Walling said that city officials had turned over all requested information but would not take any questions from reporters.

Walling said he is not the subject of the investigation.

“I am committed to rooting out waste and fraud from Flint,” he said.
