Granholm Signs Environmental Justice Executive Order

Gov. Jennifer Granholm has issued an executive order directing the Department of Environmental Quality to ensure that poor and minority communities are not unequally burdened by pollution.

The order, quietly issued just before Thanksgiving, follows a three-year campaign by a coalition of state environmental groups who have argued that Michigan, home to heavily segregated Detroit and dependent on industry for jobs, is especially vulnerable to environmental racism.

The Granholm administration has been criticized for insensitivity to environmental racism. Last month the National Park Service blocked a state-backed plan that would have transferred a public beach in poor and mostly black Benton Harbor to developers to be used as a golf course.
