Clarke tells Detroit radio station he will push for federal legislation on foreclosure

By Todd A. Heywood | 05.16.11 | 1:08 pm

Congressman Hansen Clarke (D-Detroit) told WJR’s Law Show that he intends to push Congress to pass legislation to require companies that are foreclosing on a property to prove that they own the property and have the right to do so.

Clarke said Congress has done little to address the spiraling property crisis. You can hear Clarke’s statement interview here.

“There hasn’t been definite action taken, and I am going to be prepared to do so,” Clarke said of legislation in Congress. “We have got to do this to help everyone maintain the wealth that they have in their home– which is usually their largest asset. And here’s the other critical issue. This impacts how secure we are as a community against crime, against terrorism. Because of foreclosures, because local communities have not been able to raise the revenue we have had to lay off police and fire and local emergency medical providers. So by keeping people in their homes we stabilize property values, we help strengthen our communities and we help keep families intact.”

Clarke said the foreclosure crisis is undermining the American dream.

The comments come up as register of deeds in the Michigan are uncovering so-called robo-signed foreclosure documents. While in the state Senate, Clarke supported legislation to implement a two year moratorium on foreclosures. The legislation never saw a hearing or a vote in the Republican-controlled Senate.
