The Michigan Messenger going forward

By Staff Report | 11.16.11

I am writing today to announce the closure of the Michigan Messenger. After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Dems silent on possible actions against Emergency Manager law

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 05.11.11 | 1:58 pm

The Michigan Democratic Party today refused to confirm a report that party chair Mark Brewer has ruled out supporting efforts to recall elected officials and repeal the Emergency Manager law.

Eclectablog reported today:

I have received information that Michigan Democratic Party chair, Mark Brewer, met with at least some Benton Harbor City Commissioners this week. By now, you’ve probably hear that these Commissioners have been relieved of duty by Emergency Financial Manager (EFM) Joseph Harris.

At that meeting, I am told, Brewer stated that the MDP will not be supporting any of the recall efforts around the state to recall vulnerable Republicans and Governor Rick Snyder or the effort to citizens’ effort to repeal the new EFM law.

MDP spokesman John Tramontana would not confirm that report.

“Historically the Michigan Democratic Party has not been supportive of any recall effort against any elected office holder,” he said. “We think it should be up to the voters, we are focusing on issues.”

Tramontana said the Democrats believe recall “should be restricted to misfeasance in office.”

“We have been on record against the EFM legislation that the Republicans passed.”

“In terms of moving a ballot initiative or litigation,” he said, “we don’t discuss strategy moving forward.”

Tramontana would not say whether the state Democrats have any plan to address the new law that allows the governor to appoint people to take over local governments and schools.

I can see why this state went to the repugs…the democratic party in this state has become a bunch of wimps…or they’re getting bought by the corporations. Either way…it’s not the democratic party of Michigan that it once was. They’re a pale shadow of themselves. I’m glad I chose to be independent of both parties.

The unconstitutional take over of Benton Harbor is misfeasance. If the Democrats and others are not willing to step up to the plate, then the good people of this state need to stand up together to stop this blatant power grab and the theft of our land, water and democracy.

    Ahhh, spineless democrats….

Don’t worry, you can stay silent.

Just know, that when we the people finally take it upon ourselves to right the injustices imposed upon us by the republicans (and democrats as well) we will NOT forget your silence and complacency.

Yeah- GET OUT BREWER! You have been there for too many years- and with Granholm.. accomplished little policy for Michigan people. Out.

Democrats! Throw out this non-leader Brewer now, who is refusing to fight. What good is his type of Democrat? Big zero. Nothing for the people with leaders like this.

RECALL SNYDER!! Come to the Capitol on Saturday May21st noon to 6 to sign and grab petitions to be filled. Need a MILLION signatures by August!

I do not wish to rain on this political parade, but I would suggest reading Jack Lessenberry’s “Wrong to Recall” article in last weeks Metro Times. He argues that the minimum 1.1 million signatures would require a funding of $1.5 million to become reality. And even if that succeeds, the position of governor would revert to Lt. Gov. Brian Calley( whose voting record hardly differs). Rather, he suggests that we recall representatives (only 10,000 signatures are each required). Nine fewer Republicans and Snyder loses control of one house.

Along with the representative recalls, an immediate focus should be to put a stop to the EFM law. MichiganForward.org is working on that now. Meetings are being scheduled across the state over the next few days.

They are doing both.   Maybe if Lessenberry knew what he was talking about,  it would help.

Brewer and the MDP are a joke.    You can thank Brewer for his half-assed leadership here:   http://www.michigandems.com/page/contact.html   When they ask for money, tell them to go get it from Dillon, Brewer, Snyder and the rest of the corporatists and tea baggers in this state.    and tea baggers in this state.
