Democrats introduce bill to restore unemployment benefit cuts

By Todd A. Heywood | 05.09.11 | 11:48 am

State Democrats introduced legislation Monday aimed at restoring six weeks worth of unemployment insurance cut by the GOP-dominated legislature earlier this year.

The legislation was introduced in the House by Rep. Jim Ananich (D-Flint) and in the Senate by Senate Democratic Floor Leader Tupac A. Hunter (D-Detroit).

“These unemployment resources will be more necessary than ever following the job-killing state budget passed last week,” said Ananich in a press release. The Flint lawmaker also sits on the House Appropriations Committee. “If the majority is unwilling to truly put job creation first, the least they can do is make sure families can survive while they try to find work.”

The cut was made in March. Republican law makers said it was necessary to address a nearly $4 billion deficit in the state’s unemployment fund.

Ok, so what happens when this 6 week period runs out, do you just keep renewing unemployment for periods of 6 weeks until you’ve paid people out of work for 2, 3 , 4 or 5 years? My brother inlaw just went back to work after being on unemployment for 7 months. He’s union and will not work for no one unless it is a union job. Even though he’s working I don’t expect it to last, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that he doesn’t last the rest of the month and goes on unemployment for another 7 months.

So what happens when they can’t find a job, have lost their house and have no money, should we send them out to pasture and let them die?

They need to move where the jobs are! You can’t wait for jobs to just fall out of the sky or pray for a lifetime of unemployment. God helps those who help themselves.

Many of them probably don’t even own a car let alone deal with the gas prices. How far do they have to go? Where? Where are the promised jobs?

Yeah just move to where jobs are… Unemployment country wide is 9%. Many parts of the world are also in a recession… I am against people abusing the system, but when times are tough it is not the time to get tough of people. We are all in this together, we should be giving each other legs up, not slaps in the face!
