This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Facing protests, Pscholka withdraws from Blossomtime parade

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 05.06.11 | 10:31 am

State Rep. Al Pscholka (R-Stevensville), House sponsor of Michigan’s Emergency Manager law, has announced that he will not participate in the annual St. Joseph/Benton Harbor Blossomtime parade this Saturday because people are planning to protest.

Pscholka’s bill, which was signed into law in March, has been used to strip the Benton Harbor City Commission of all decision making power, a move that has inspired protests, national television coverage, calls for legal action and an effort to recall him.

In a Facebook message Pscholka said that the parade, which will be lead by Gov. Rick Snyder, “is not, in any way, a tasteful forum for political dialogue.”

“When I got word that there was a possibility of protestors at the Blossomtime Parade, I was deeply disappointed and angered, to say the least. With every indication that the protests will still take place there, I have made the decision not to participate as part of the parade procession.

“I am a supporter of free speech. I consider it to be among the most essential founding principles of our nation. Though recent protests regarding Michigan’s new Fiscal Accountability Act have been largely spurred by misunderstandings and misinformation, I would be first in line to defend a citizen’s right to invoke his or her constitutional liberties. With few exceptions, the protests that have taken place before our state’s capitol and in Southwest Michigan have been conducted peacefully and with great respect to the venue. By rule of law, protestors do indeed have the same right to bring their voice to the Blossomtime Parade.

“But that doesn’t make it appropriate.

“To fully appreciate why the Blossomtime parade is the wrong forum for protest, you have to be familiar with the tradition of the event. Since the early 20th century, the festival has served as a celebration of the agricultural community and a bountiful environment. The Blossomtime Parade is about children, families, and a celebration of our rich farm heritage. It is a wholesome community event that our young people have looked forward to all year long. It is truly unfortunate that some groups have decided to send in professional agitators by the bus load to try to create a political sideshow.”

If “Appeal to Decorum” isn’t a logical fallacy, it should be.

If it is a community event, then it is no place for republicans – who do not believe in communities, only businesses and the relatively helpless individual.

    Dear
    Al Pscholka,
Your diatribe concerning our ‘rich farm heritage’ failed to include my favorite agricultural idiom: REAP WHAT YOU SOW.

    1. “I consider [free speech] to be among the most essential founding principles of our nation.”

    – but not representative democracy?

    2. He doesn’t consider it a proper place for political discourse….

    – What other option are the people left with? This form of government is not set up to cater to the peoples demands as they arise between 4 year election cycles, so this is what must be resorted to.

    3. Your final statements, about this being a family/community event.

    – It still is, except this year, its gonna families and community members out to to let dogs like you and snyder know you’ll be faced with opposition when you try and destroy those communities and families. Why you and snyder would EVER think it’d be ok to even step foot in BH, among other places, is behind me.

    4. Professional agitators? Buses?

    – This right wing conspiracy drives me crazy

what makes us “professional”? because we seem to protest a lot? GEE, i wonder WHY blacks, workers, students, women, chicanos, etc, etc, seem to be protesting a whole bunch?!?!?!?!

Yea, sometimes groups of those people pool their funds together and rent buses. Just like sometimes Billionaires–>front political shells (americans for prosperity, etc)–>pseudo-”grass roots” movements. Or just like how, say, Glenn Beck rented out every single hotel around the capital to give free rooms to any tea bagger that could drive to DC that weekend (which, apparently isn’t to hard to do for retired and middle class workers)

I wasn’t gonna go to BH this weekend, but I’m rethinking after reading this.

Maybe a find a bus to go one……

It may be ‘blossomtime’ for grand marshal Rick Snyder as he motorcades his way down the streets of Benton Harbor, but a far more illustrious parade took place over 66 years ago down the Champs-Elysees in Paris, France. The grand marshal of that celebration was a fellow by the name of ADOLPH HITLER !! Personally, I see little difference between the two events…
