Feds extend company’s contract for anthrax vaccine

By Todd A. Heywood | 05.05.11 | 11:37 am

Emergent Biosolutions has announced that the federal government has extended a contract with the company to continue to produce anthrax vaccines.

Emergent, which is based in Rockville MD, makes the vaccine in a Lansing bio-facility. The facility used to belong to the state of Michigan but was privatized by former Gov. John Engler.

The contract extension is worth $101 million, reports the Lansing State Journal. Under the agreement, the facility will create 3.42 million more doses of the vaccine. The previous contract had Emergent create 14.5 million doses. The extension production will be used to beef up the nation’s stockpile of vaccine.

Emergent’s vaccine, BioThrax, is the only federally approved anthrax vaccine.
