Jackson: ‘We will take this to the Department of Justice’

By Todd A. Heywood | 04.21.11 | 11:16 am

The Reverend Jesse Jackson says the move by Benton Harbor Emergency Financial Manager Joseph Harris is illegal.

In an interview with Fox 2 News, Jackson says he will work with residents to take the issue to the U.S. Department of Justice and if necessary the U.S. Supreme Court.

“The right to vote must not be tampered with,” Jackson said. “In fact if it happens in Benton Harbor it can happen in Detroit. The idea of disenfranchising the elected officials by the governor is much too much power.”

Jackson says he will work with local church and civic leaders to form a coalition to file a lawsuit over Harris’ usurpation of the power of local elected officials in Benton Harbor.

Good. From what I have heard of the issue, the Benton Harbor area is the last of lake frontage that is not developed for those with a lot of money and they Republicans real intent is to be able to take the land over for development, forcing the poor and disenfranchised out. They already took over the public park that was donated to the city in 1917 with the provision that it always remain a public park. Instead they have made it into a golf course that you have to pay to use. They “replaced” the public park land with some donated by Whirlpool that is contaminated and not usable until it is cleaned- now a function the taxpayers will have to pay for to even be able to use it. And I don’t think it is lake front either! I can’t believe they would go so far as to force out elected officials that the residents voted for without any input from the residents. That is not democracy at work.
