After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Republican bill would block offshore wind projects

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 04.06.11 | 1:16 pm

Reps. Ray Franz (R-Onekama) and Jon Bumstead (R-Newaygo) have introduced a bill that would ban all offshore wind development in the Great Lakes.

HB 4499 would block the state from entering into a lease or deed or granting a permit, “for the siting, placement, construction, operation, or maintenance of any structure to research wind energy development, any wind turbine, or any equipment or structure related to a wind turbine, including, but not limited to, a transmission line.”

The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Technology.

Offshore wind projects have been rejected in Mason and Oceana counties but the Muskegon city council recently voted to support an offshore wind energy research project planned by the Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center at Grand Valley State University.

    Once again, Republicans stand in the way of progress. Maybe it would be ok to build if some off-shore wind corporation would contribute to republican campaigns.

    Whats the reasoning? I dont get it…with oil becoming more & more expensive its past time to explore other options! Not to mention the added revenue brought in by “leasing” state land for these projects and the jobs created by the companies that manage them.

    We are near, at, or have passed:
    * Peak Oil
    * Peak Coal
    * Peak Natural Gas
    * Peak Common Sense

    Our remaining options:
    * Conservation and Efficiency (as if our lives depend on it – they actually do)
    * Wind (off-shore is far more productive than on-shore)
    * Solar
    * Nuclear
    * Biofuel / Biomass (dirtier than coal, harmful to the environment. Poses great risk to human health, consumes the very same living plants that we need to clean the air, produce oxygen, and filter our fresh water in the soil protecting drinking water) … a real dead end solution, with a special emphasis on “dead.”

    What will it be people? Most of you still want the lights to go on, and your computers to power up?

    I say, NO to Reps. Ray Franz (R-Onekama) and Jon Bumstead plan to harm Michigan. I say YES to offshore wind.

    I have met these Neanderthals at various campaign events and their ideas for renewable energy come as no surprise, I am sorry they were elected to office, and even more sorry they can’t keep their promises to bring jobs to Michigan by showing they can embrace clean energy projects.
