Atlanta protesters arrested

By Todd A. Heywood | 04.05.11 | 8:48 pm

The eight undocumented youth who have been protesting in Atlanta were arrested late this afternoon.

Samantha Nawrocki, a spokesperson for One Michigan, said the youth were arrested shortly before 4 p.m. They were protesting a Georgia law which bans undocumented youth from attending state universities.

“Yes, all eight have been arrested,” Nawrocki said. “What we don’t know is when or if they will be turned over to ICE.”

Previous protesters from the group have been arrested in Tucson, AZ and Washington, D.C. After they were arraigned on local charges Immigration and Customs Enforcement have then detained the youth and begun deportation proceedings.

I can answer that question whether they will be turned over to ICE or not and the answer is a resounding NO. That’s exactly why they did what they did. NO FEAR. Illegal immigrants basically have NOTHING TO FEAR in this country. The taxpayer cannot stand them, but our laws will back them up and they know it.

If the laws backed them up then why would they be protesting the inaccessibility of higher education for undocumented students or the lack of a pathway to legal status for students like themselves? I think you missed the point of this protest, if the laws backed them up, they WOULD NOT be protesting!
