Abortion rights foes tell Auburn Hills to send Planned Parenthood packing

By Todd A. Heywood | 03.08.11 | 9:40 am

Anti-abortion rights activists in Auburn delivered over 10,000 petition signatures to the city council Monday night demanding they stop or limit a Planned Parenthood operation in the city.

While the group delivered 10,850 signatures to city officials, only 400 of those signatures were from Auburn Hills residents. The city had a population of 20,973 in 2009, according to city-data.com.

The Oakland Press reports that Auburn Hills Mayor James McDonald says the city’s hands are tied on restrictions it can apply to the group.

“They (Planned Parenthood) meet all of our zoning requirements,” he said. “We have no control over it. Our hands are tied. The only thing they get from us will be inspections once its finished.”

That is not stopping anti-abortion rights advocates, the Press reports.

“Our goal is to keep this abortion clinic from ever opening,” explained Monica Migliorino Miller, director of CPLS [Citizens for a Pro-Life Society]. “Given the fact that abortion is legal, we know that this will be a total uphill climb.”

Miller told the council she wants officials to prevent Planned Parenthood from accessing the schools and that her group is targeting potential contractors who might do the necessarily remodeling for the building to be turned into a medical facility.
