Planned Parenthood and the issue of abortion have been the target of Republicans around the country as they’ve taken control of legislatures in the past two months, but now the issue is hitting home for the city of Auburn Hills.
The Oakland Press reports that anti-abortion advocates plan to deliver a petition containing 10,000 signatures to the city’s council Monday night to oppose the opening of a new Planned Parenthood facility in the city.
Anti-abortion rights activists have been protesting the plans for months. They advocates in opposition are being lead by Citizens for a Pro-life Society, Central Oakland County Right to Life, Michigan Life Span and Stand to Oppose Planned Parenthood Abortion Racket in Auburn Hills. On top of two strategy sessions, and two large protests at the locations, the groups are also holding hourly vigils outside the location.
What anti-abortion advocates don’t talk about in their various protests of Planned Parenthood, nationally and locally, is that the group is one of the nation’s leading providers of sexual health care services from family planning to contraception to STI diagnosis and treatment. As MLive reports Lori Lamerand, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Mid and South Michigan, says of the group: “Ninety-eight percent of what we do prevents the other 2 percent of what we do.”
Anti-abortion rights advocates say they are preparing a legal challenge if the city council of Auburn Hills does not reject the Planned Parenthood facility in the city. On what grounds such a challenge would be based is unknown.
