The city of Allen Park — like most municipalities in the state — is facing a budget deficit of nearly one million, and now the city’s administrator says the elected council will have to address the budget on their own.
On Tuesday, Allen Park’s City Council voted unanimously to issue lay off notices to the city’s entire fire fighting force. That, as could be expected, led to outrage among residents and unions, reports the Detroit Free Press.
Eric Waidelich, the city administrator, resigned over the weekend. He says he did so in order to allow the city council to focus on the budget crisis, and not be distracted:
“During these tough financial times, and with the challenges that the City faces ahead, I do not want my presence to inhibit the undivided attention that these issues require and deserve of its elected officials.”
Waidelich said that his children had been subjected to political questioning by adults in the community since the layoff vote Tuesday.
The city is facing a deficit because of declining property values, residents failing to pay taxes and unpaid emergency medical billing for ambulance runs.
