Story of East Lansing teens bullying-related death focus of new dance program

By Todd A. Heywood | 02.24.11 | 1:52 pm

The Gold Dance School from Brockton, MA will premiere a new dance about an East Lansing teen’s bullying and death on April 1 and 2 this year.

Here is a video teasing the group’s dance. The group’s program is called Accept.

The story is about Matt Epling, son of Kevin Epling of East Lansing, who took his life after a brutal bullying incident.

Kevin and his wife, Tammy, have been fighting to get anti-bullying legislation passed by the Michigan legislature for years. The legislation has even been named in Matt’s honor.

But the state legislature, particularly the Senate, has failed to act, making Michigan one of only five states in the union without comprehensive anti-bullying laws. Now, Matt’s story is being told by the Gold Dance School.

I was bullied pretty bad in elementary school but 25ish years later I realized those kids were just copying how the adults in their lives treated them. So, while I support anti-bullying policies they DO NOT change “the culture” like the Epling’s are hoping. To change the culture, the parents, not the schools must be the target.
