Auto sales up 17 percent in January

Domestic auto sales by the Big Three American automakers was up significantly in January over last year and the increase was led by General Motors and Chrysler, the two companies that had to undergo managed bankruptcies in 2009.

General Motors posted a 22 percent increase over January, 2010. Chrysler came in with a 23 percent increase. And Ford lagged a bit behind with a 9 percent boost in sales.

The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate was 12.6 million cars, higher than the monthly annual sales averages for the past few months. Total 2010 auto sales were 11.6 million units. This was the best January for domestic sales since 2008.
