Hamtramck considers outsourcing all city services

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 01.24.11 | 3:05 pm

City council members in nearly insolvent Hamtramck will consider a resolution directing the city manager to investigate receiving emergency and other services from another government entity.

Councilmember Catrina Stackpoole has asked her fellow council members to approve a resolution directing City Manager William Cooper to explore the possible of receiving police, fire and other services from Wayne County, Detroit, Highland Park or other government agency.

The city, which has about 23,000 residents, is facing a $3 million dollar deficit and has asked the Snyder administration to allow it to declare bankruptcy — a move that would allow it to renegotiate labor contracts.

In his State of the State address last week Gov. Rick Snyder suggested that communities that take steps to share more services might be rewarded with larger revenue sharing payments from the state.
