Balloting begins in race for national GOP chair post

By Todd A. Heywood | 01.14.11 | 3:18 pm

The Republican National Committee has begun its first round of balloting to select a new chairperson. The person elected will serve a two year term.

Currently, the top two leaders for the position are current GOP Chair Michael Steele and Wisconsin Party Chair Reince Priebus. It is widely believed that Steele will lose the balloting. Former Michigan GOP Chair Saul Anuzis is also making a bid for the national post, and is seen by some political watchers as the person who will emerge as the winning candidate if balloting continues too long.

In order to win, a candidate has to receive at least 85 votes. The first balloting broke out 45 for Priebus, 44 for Steele, 32 for Maria Cino, 24 for Anuzis, and 23 votes for Ann Wagner.

Anuzis was nominated by Morton Blackwell who runs the Leadership Institute and made his money with a mailing empire that supported Republicans.

You can watch the balloting live on C-SPAN here.
