Gov.-elect Rick Snyder continues to announce the names of people who will help run the government when he takes the reigns Saturday at noon. On Wednesday evening he announced the interim leadership for the Michigan Department of Human Services.
That department oversees — among other things — welfare, food stamps and child protective services.
To lead the department on an interim basis will be Duane Berger. Berger comes to the post from working in the Secretary of State’s office. There, he served as senior deputy director of department services for the Secretary of State, providing development and management of department budget and financial records, technology strategic and operational functions, human resource activities, portfolio and project management.
Snyder also appointed two interim deputies for the department. State Rep. Dudley Spade, of Tipton will oversee child advocacy roles in the department, while Brian Rooney will take up the role of ferreting out fraud and waste in the programs at the department. Spade is a Democrat and Rooney is a Republican.
Rooney is currently serves as an attorney and director of communications and development at the Thomas More Law Center. Rooney had an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination in the 7th Congressional District. He was beaten by Tipton Republican Tim Walberg, who went on to win the general election and replaces Rep. Mark Schauer (D-Bedford Township) in the Congress in January.
