Detroit Fire Dept. admits city underreported arsons

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 12.23.10 | 1:23 pm

An FBI crime statistics report released this week listed Detroit as having 339 arson fires during the first six months of the year, but the city’s fire department says the number is far higher.

FOX 2 reports:

Deputy Fire Commissioner Seth Doyle tells FOX 2 the actual number is 843 confirmed arson fires. That is more than twice the number given to the FBI.

It does not end there. The city told the feds that in 2009 there were 624 arsons. FOX 2 has learned that number is about 1,000 fires short of the truth. The actual number is 1,618.

I called Mayor Dave Bing’s office to see how he is reacting to news that the city underreported arsons and got a recorded message that the office is on vacation for the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a firebombing on the city’s eastside last night. Three houses in the 5000 block of Manitique were torched in an attack that killed the father of a Detroit Police homicide detective.
