From the county that gave us the HIV-as-terrorism case comes another salacious story of a sexually transmitted infection. This time incoming assistant Macomb County Executive Damian Kassab has tendered his resignation before he even started the job, reports Detroit TV station WXYZ.
The reason? Kelly Dobek, a woman with whom Kassab had an affair, is suing him alleging he infected her with herpes.
Kassab denies the claim, and says this lawsuit is a response to a suit he and his wife filed against the woman to stop her harassment of them. He says since he cut the relationship with the woman off, the woman has continued to contact both he and his wife.
Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel, who was elected in November to serve as the county’s first executive, had planned to have Kassab as his number two. But on Monday, he asked for and received Kassab’s resignation. Hackel said the banker had to deal with his personal issues.
The question is, will Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith charge Kassab with bio-terrorism for knowingly spreading the herpes virus? After all the virus has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease, a debilitating and ultimately fatal disease. It is unclear if Dobek is infected with HSV I or HSV II.
In Michigan, it is only a crime to fail to disclose an HIV-positive status prior to sex, leaving to those exposed or infected with other sexually transmitted infections to rely on civil suit recourse and the state Public Health Code.
