Federal monitor failed to notice corruption in Detroit water dept.

Kwame Kilpatrick’s associate Bobby Ferguson received more than $310 million in contracts with the Detroit Water and Sewerage Dept. despite official supervision of the department by U.S. District Judge John Feikens.

Why wasn’t U.S. District Judge John Feikens paying attention? Feikens monitored the department FOR 30+ YEARS and recently retired at age 93. As you may imagine, he was in poor health. Feikens appointed Tom Lewand, father of the Lions’ president and long-time Granholm ally, to look into stuff. Lewand filed a report. Once. Maybe that’s why Granholm is so eager to just “move on.” [Detroit Free Press, Macomb Daily]

The Detroit Free Press reports that many of the contracts that federal investigators say were corrupt involve pollution abatement mandated by the Clean Water Act.

Last year the Detroit sewage system dumped 34 billion gallons of untreated sewage and storm water into the Detroit and Rouge rivers which flow into Lake Erie
