Southern Michigan township to hold hearings on wind farm

By Todd A. Heywood | 12.13.10 | 11:30 am

Riga Township’s Planning Board is planning a meeting Tuesday night to decide how to proceed with zoning issues around a proposed wind farm in Lenawee County.

The Adrian Daily Telegram reports the company funding the project has agreed to bring in experts on wind farming to testify before the commission, which will be discussing and developing zoning rules for wind turbines as part of the state’s movement to alternative energy options.

The company, Great Lakes LLC, is one of two companies seeking to put in wind turbines in Lenawee County’s Riga, Ogden and Palmyra townships. To facilitate the discussion for the planning commission, and address the commission’s budget over runs, the company agreed to pay the expenses of Huron County building inspector Russell Lundberg to travel to the area to speak.

“We recommended that they bring him in for a resource, as he has a great deal of experience in these matters. We’ll pay the expenses for him to come,” [Great Lakes LLC CEO Larry] Gould said. “We also know that the township planning commission has exceeded its budget for this year and the township board is having to cover some of their expenses.”

Another wind farm in northern Michigan could begin construction as soon as this summer, reports the Muskegon Chronicle.
