Wyoming bans medical marijuana

By Todd A. Heywood | 12.07.10 | 9:51 am

The Wyoming City Council voted unanimously Monday night to ban medical marijuana in the city. Wyoming is a suburb of Grand Rapids.

The Grand Rapids Press reports the move was made by the council because the body believes the law approving medical marijuana poses a danger to the community.

Mayor Jack Poll is a pharmacist and believes the drug should be distributed through a pharmacy like any other prescription medication.

But supporters of medical marijuana are preparing a recall campaign targeting all seven council members.

“They went against the will of the voters,” [John] Ter Beek [a lawyer suing the city over the ban] said of the council’s actions on Monday.

At least one council member is ready to lose his post over the vote.

“If I have to be recalled because I vote on preserving safety in our community, then so be it. Move somebody else into my chair,” [John] Pastoor said. “The only way to handle (medical marijuana) is like we handle any other drug.”

The affirmation vote upholds an ordinance passed by the city last month.

Wyoming is not the only municipality struggling with the state’s medical marijuana law. The City of Lansing on Monday night approved a moratorium on new dispensary businesses until July 1, 2011. The moratorium was put in place to allow the city to develop regulations for the businesses.

The City of East Lansing is expected to move forward on new regulations on dispensaries this week, bringing its ban to a close.

But other cities are in court battling over their actions in trying to regulate medical marijuana. The ACLU filed suit against Livonia, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills because those municipalities created bans on medical marijuana.

It’s sad that the Wyoming City Council prefers subsidising the black market gangs instead of regulating a safer method for patients. Shame on the Wyoming City Council for putting public safety last.
