Senate fails to pass unemployment extension

By Ed Brayton | 12.01.10 | 7:49 am

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday failed to pass a bill that would have extended federal unemployment benefits through next year as Republicans objected to the fact that the $56.4 billion price tag was not offset by other budget cuts so it would not increase the deficit.

The extended federal benefits expired last night at midnight. About 800,000 Americans will lose those benefits next week, with two million losing them by the end of the year and nearly four million by April.

This is GREAT news for employers, many who have trouble hiring employees becuase they (employees) want to hold out for yet another free ride!

I am a recruiter for the transportation industry and we hear all the time from prospective employees…”can you hold off on your job offer until I see if yet another extension is passed”.

We currently have over 25 openings for OTR (over the road drivers) and expect the phones and online apps to explode as news of the extension failing reaches the affected unemployed!

They are jobs out there, although maybe not some of the most desireable positions, but this will force some that take advantage of the system into the jobs that ARE available!

I am happy that this extension was denied, especially when some jobs are available and the country’s rising national debt. This was long over due!

As you can see, you are being depicted a evil. You are being depicted as a greedy business man/woman. They only want ill will for you. .
So maybe it is in the best interest of all on this forum for your company to shut down, (just like Consolidated Frtways or Colonial).
You are evil and you should pay. Close, stop existing, you have no right to prosper (even though you picked correctly the best marketable skill set needed in this economy).
Your company should “shrug”, Our society cannot use someone so brazen as to run a business that obviously “steals” from its associates. So much that they stay year after year for further treatment.

Wow pure ignorance! So you are saying that the 4 million + are just holding out because they want to sit on there ass and collect money and live the high life? I’m an electrician that has been laid off and on since Nov 2008. Most of the jobs out there are contract and short term. Bouncing around the US to make wages to support a family. Waisting those small wages on travel and hotels. I have actually looked into the OTR as an career change and they are not much better. Your poor conditions and wages make families starve. I wish on you sir that you lose your recruiting job, seeing that you are just stealing wages that could be directly paid to the worker instead. Get a real job my friend and actually do something productive in your life instead of riding the backs of hard workers to pay for it. I have never wanted to be unemployed in my life and the majority of people on UI don’t either. It was created and paid for long ago with the the workers wages that collect it now dumb ass!!

Funny Airman – When I read about the post up above that you are replying to, I initially thought, “what is this guy talking about?? Is there ONE area out there that has an abundance of jobs that are tough to fill??” Then it came to me – There is one industry right now that no matter what you can ascertain employment: Fast Food. Poor conditions, extraordinarily underpaid, zero benefits, etc. After that it was pretty easy to link the attributes I just assigned to Fast Food to that of the story above.

Listen – I can’t imagine the Democrats really conceding something like this because they are unable to guarantee the money won’t count against the budget. I am personally one of the millions that will receive my last check next week. It’s a terrible situation but it honestly boils down to this:

The first statement above from the OTR spokesman could be no truer. Employers love this. When prospective employees are getting a decent wage to support their families, etc, then employers are forced to actually make reasonable offers. Unemployment in and of itself is generally a fraction of what you actually made at the job you were laid off at – so when you are making $275/wk every Tuesday from the Feds – And you have just gotten to the point where somehow, someway you are able to budget this money to live – a job offer at some company clearly run by right wing extremists needs to be substantially higher than what you are making – in fact, most would argue the offer should rival what you made prior to being laid off.

Last thought – at one point in time this country was employer run – That ceased in the 1930s and has progressed, furthering employee protection and rights. Maybe it’s been too long since something like that happened??

      • Anonymous

“Stealing wages that could be paid to the worker instead”??????

Do you people actually think that Washington should nationalize all business so they will not “steal” what is “rightfully the workers” of the world?

Now who is the “dumb ass”?

The man was stating an experience. He has openings, many candidates would rather stay on unemployment than take his job, he wants to hire but cannot until the “nipple” is no longer available.
You state that OTR is “not much better”, but obviously it IS better.
Now, the building trades are the absolute backbone of our society. Electricians, plumbers, carpenters, roofers, concrete, heavy equipment, etc. Housing starts must increase, this should be the aim. But if the government continues to soak up credit, then housing starts will not ignite.
Man, you people are blaming the wrong people. Read up on Jimmy Carter’s Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 and who the Clinton admin pushed it. And if you have any since of reason you will know that external (gov) intervention into the delicate monetary system (especially involving the building trades).
So Airman 7168, I am cheering for you and your skills to prosper again, but it is government actions that keep you down, and it isn’t necessarily “The Republicans” as most on here believe.

Why not report those prospective employees who are clearly taking advantage of the system?
Of course there are people who abuse the system. But there are others who don’t.
Of course there are jobs out there. The problem is that there aren’t enough jobs. For every five unemployed workers, there is only one job available.
I’ve had at least a dozen recruiters (from across the nation) tell me that there simply aren’t enough jobs.
When the unemployment benefits end and the explosion of applications come your way, how many of those people will get a job? Only 25.
I agree that we can’t keep plugging the hole with unemployment extensions, but the solution is not to just take advantage of available jobs.
      There’s not enough.

      • Anonymous

meme67, you are correct in saying unemployment extensions are not the final answer. And that taking advantage of available jobs is not the solutions in the big picture.
You want an immediate action that will put jobs in play, have the government discuss changing our current tax structure to a more streamed lined one, say the “Fair Tax”. No one looses money, and the highest earners may even pay a little more. But the money spent on accounting firms would be transitioned to R&D. And enormous amount of capital would be available for business GROWTH, not business maintenance.
If our political leaders would just utter the words, “The Fair Tax will be considered”, some people would pull the hiring “trigger” now.
Investors want stability, and they will position their capital in the best place that returns the most. Like us who maneuver our 401K money to gain the highest return for retirement.

If this fellow hires 25 then this industry must be growing, so maybe another carrier will be hiring, then another.

However, after beind layoff from my construction job ( which help pay for my education) nearly two years ago, I have been unable to find work in ANY field. I have applied to over 50 full and part-time positions in the last two months. To date, I have not even had an offer for an interview! I live near Rochester, NY which is considered to be the fifteenth worst city for finding a job. Sure glad I don’t live in the fourteenth worst city.

My husband just finished trucking school through a program that took the first 6 months of his unemployment time to get. So if there wasn’t an extension he would not of been able to finish school to find a new career. Now he is looking for employment and no one is hiring….so do some good and pass on some leads for truck driving for a new driver. Pay if forward and stop complaining about something you have no right to. There are always people that ruin it for others. But there are good people without jobs looking and looking. Stop judging, Karma will be at your doorstep.

Is it our fault that you as a recruiter cannot successfully close a sale by getting the prospective employee hired ? Is it our fault that your organization can’t provide a position thats providing them something better than being on unemployment ? Sounds to me that you or your company needs to re-evaluate what they have to offer a prospective employee. Just because you have an open position doesn’t mean that your organization is a fit for the prospective employee. Remember in recruiting its not about getting a warm body in a position its matching the right postion/company to prospective employee. THATS what makes the company sucessful.

You sure stepped into a pond of alligators. If you think that adding reason to any discussion on unemployment forums will help, you will quickly realize reason is in dramatically short supply.
I too am unemployed. But….I have been using the time at home to build skill sets:
      * Developing a better knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, something a number of companies need. (found on the internet)
      * Retooling (using the internet) my basic knowledge of ISO Quality Management
      * Taken day seminars (inexpensive ones) to review leadership skills.

All this is being added to my resume and has resulted in a couple of interviews.

What have the others on this forum been doing? Some of which I have seen on other forums. Blaming “the Republicans” because their derelict champions, “the Democrats”, can’t hand over more free (borrowed) money. Hey CaptainFrank, no “F-Us” today?

That may be your situation in your little corner of the world and I contemplated whether or not to even wasting my time to such short sightedness. Because one or more people want to free ride on unemployment doesn’t mean that’s the case with the other millions. I worked steady as a pipefitter for 25 years and carry a lot of pride in my training and skills. Now, with the commercial and industrial side of our trade struggling because larger corporations are hesitant to invest, work isn’t as plentiful. I, like hundreds of my brothers are wanting and waiting for things to turn around so we can get back to work to support our families. The federal extensions are a necessity because without them you’ll see millions of additional foreclosures and permanent set backs. So my advise to you would be until you’ve walked a mile in others shoes, sit down, shut up and do your job. Stop whining and be glad you’re working.

    Definition of Congress:

And did you ever stop to think that most people are getting MORE per week in Unemployment then if they took that “undesirable” job?! Who would do that and shoot themselves in the foot?! Other then your spelling and grammar being uncommonly bad. I am a recruiter as well, and you sound like a moron. Instead of reactively “waiting” for the phones to ring and online apps to explode, perhaps you could haver dropped a link here to back up your 25 openings.
We are recruiters, we were trained with basically no experience and no college requirement. Knock yourself off your high horse, being complacent and “content” as a recruiter does not make you an authority on anything. Remember the coefficient that crime and murder rise with unemployment and lost benifits. Not all of us live in the safety of their parents basement. Perhaps when you get out in the real world you can give your wallet up to someone trying to feed their kids. It is a balance.

Republicans are shooting down legislation that is good for the common man.
These same senators are the same people that are pushing for Bush Era Tax Cuts. Where are the priorities for these senators. Simple math; take 100 people who vote. Only 2 out of 100 benefit from the tax cuts. By not extending tax cuts, governement is expected to receive 770 billion in tax dollars. Current unemployment legislation cost is 56.4 billion. That leaves 713.6 billion left. I don’t see why issue wasn’t raised. Republicans don’t want the people to know the true reason. This is their gravy train. If any tax cut/credit legislation is proposed, it should be tied with job creation and growth. This is a no-brainer. Why does it take an unemployed electrician not a senator from either party to see this. Unemployment benefits need to be extended; simple decision. The economy must get running at a faster rate. Senators need to vote for what is good for the common man not the multimilliionaires that have plenty of cash to live on. The President cannot do this alone. Republican Senators, you are holding legislation that affects 98% hostage. These 2% own businesses that provide goods and services that people use on a daily basis. What if people steal these products instead of paying for them. These 2% would have less cashflow coming in from business operations. The legal system will be tied up with all new cases for crime committed. These will be people taking the items what they need to survive. Then you will have the Robin Hood option. Businesses will be looted in the middle of the night. Store owners will be staying overnite to guard their wares. People will be hurt. Larger businesses will hire security to watch their wares. Large group of organized people versus small security team. Good luck to the security team.
Bottom line is this. Unemployment Extensions and Job Creation is what this country needs NOW.
Bush Era Tax Cuts should expire but in its place tax cuts for companies that hired the unemployed. Tax cuts for businesses that will create jobs that this country needs.
Tax cuts for individuals that make a certain dollar amount only benefit those people.
Newly elected senators, you have a six year term. Work with the current administration and get this problem fixed. No bickering. JUST FIX THE PROBLEM. Don’t wait till you get the guy that your party wants in the oval office. Your votes are public record and it will bite you in the ass if you don’t get it right the first time.

My husbands been in same company, union for years. And has a good pension with them. Noway he’d give up his job to have a piss ass one like yours. Its not the peoples fault this is happening. and i agree with the person above….. time to help our own country instead of wasting all the damn money on other countries and wars!!!!! And republicans……You suck… from this day on …not one damn republican will get my vote!!!!!!!!

well said lynnster8! I have NEVER been on unemployment in the entire 35 years I have spent working. Now, because I managed to have a job longer than others on UI, I will also be cut off with no extensions when my UI runs out in two weeks. Why can’t I get the same number of extensions (unless I find a job before hand) that millions of others received? I worked and paid into the system for 35 years, and this is the first time I have EVER had to use it.

Well said. I think those like mr. re-what ever you call it should really live like those of us that have no job offers here in michigan. NONE.. AT ALL. and they turn this down once again. As said earlier, those sob’s will live high on the hog for christmas when those of us that got screwed with the cut-off will watch our kids starve and go without. I for one sure wouldn’t want to be in any of their shoes in this country, cause I think its going to hell and fast.

after reading about them wanting to give the rich a tax cut this year…..i had to laugh.Their more worried about the rich getting richer……..then they are about the less fortunate people. HAHA! Well,,,, we all know they won’t let that pass unless they extend unemployment benefits. Thats the deal from what i’m getting. But personally, they should pass unemployment,,,,,,and give those rich pricks nothing! Makes me so mad….they have millions of dollars……….yet want breaks……When theres people right here starving, and need the U.I. to feed their kids,,,,,and make a nice xmas for them. WHAT THE HELLS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD? AND THOSE DAMN GREEDY RICH PEOPLE? WISH THEY WERE IN OTHERS SHOES RIGHT NOW. GRRRRRR

Constitutional convention, bypass lawmakers, pass laws. Illegalize lobby, illegalize contributions. ENACT A NEW GOVERNMENTAL OVERSIGHT BRANCH, only able to target politicians and government officials for investigation and prosecution. Answerable only to the voters and able to investigate the supreme court. Repeal the patriot act except for this branch to use its techniques to monitor our politicians who are more destructive than domestic terrorists. This branch may not affect or prosecute private citizens not holding political office. This agency should only employ people only from a near minimum wage background, it should pay extremely well. (10 million a year) This in effect creates true job appreciation and no need to accept bribes. You may not work in the agency for more than 4 years in your lifetime. There are plenty of honest blue collar people that will take a 10M$ job.

to the recruiter…YES I need a job but until you have been in the situation, dont be so quick to pass judgement..EVERYONE is not out there just so happy to collect a check for $300 with 3 mouths to feed and a mortgage, and sleeping in the dark, with cold water, but thankful for the roof over our heads. Please dont be SO quick. May God continue to bless you with your CURRENT job,but again be careful in what you see because there is an all seeing eye, whether you beleive it or not.

No wonder you can’t recruit anyone if you’re the first impression of what a potential employee is going to have to tolerate. If you have a job to do, get off the computer and get to work.
