Millions of American saw their wealth decline in the last year and many, especially here in Michigan, lost jobs and homes. The lawmakers charged with fixing the economy, however, have fared far better.
A new report from the Center for Responsive Politics finds that nearly half of the members of the U.S. Congress are millionaires and the collective wealth of congress members grew by 16 percent in 2009.
Mlive points out that five members of Metro Detroit’s Congressional delegation are millionaires.
Rep. John Dingell (D-Dearborn), est net worth: $2,499,540
Rep. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township), est net worth: $1,935,073
Sen. Carl Levin (D-Detroit), est net worth: $1,833,389
Rep. Sander Levin (D-Royal Oak), est net worth: $1,406,880

U.S. Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit), whose wife reported indigence and requested a court-appointed attorney earlier this year, remains one of the poorest members of Congress, breaking even with reported assets and liabilities of around $35,000 apiece.
Elsewhere in Michigan, Reps. Fred Upton (R-Kalamazoo) and Dave Camp (R-Midland) — worth an estimated $25.7 and $10.5 million, respectively — are Michigan’s richest Congress members. Both are also favorites to assume powerful positions as the Republican party regains control of the House in the wake of this month’s mid-term elections./blockquote>
