CMU announces suspect in noose incident

By Todd A. Heywood | 11.18.07 | 4:23 pm

A male Central Michigan University student has admitted to police that he created and hung four nooses found in a campus classroom on Monday.

CMU police would not identify the student. They said their investigation is nearing completion and they expect to turn it over to the Isabella County Prosecutor early this week.

The nooses, according to a press release on the CMU website, were made of compressed gas line used in lab work. (http://www.news.cmic…)

The incident came to light on Thursday and has sparked one protest. But it was originally reported on Monday, Nov. 12.

The campus has been a lightning rod of racial incidents in the past months, with anti-Native American tracts being distributed on Columbus Day, and recently an anti-Muslim tract was distributed on campus. In April, the campus was littered with anti-gay graffiti, and last year members of the National Socialist Movement (NSM, a neo-Nazi group, based in Cadillac attempted to recruit on the Mt. Pleasant campus.
