The ongoing soap opera involving Sam Riddle, Mary Waters and Monica Conyers has taken yet another turn as Richard Convertino, the former U.S. Attorney who represented both Riddle and Waters in their federal corruption trial earlier this year, has asked the court to allow him to withdraw as Riddle’s attorney during the appeal because Riddle has not been able to pay him for his services. The Detroit News reports:
Convicted political consultant Sam Riddle’s lawyer wants to dump him as a client, saying he hasn’t been paid and is owed money for hiring the U.S. Marshals Service to shuttle Riddle to his mother’s deathbed.
Riddle’s lawyer, Richard Convertino, filed a motion to withdraw today because there has been a breakdown of the attorney-client relationship and because Riddle is broke.
Riddle has been sentenced to 37 months in prison, the same term given to his former boss, Monica Conyers, both for bribery and corruption. Riddle was also found guilty of assault for brandishing a shotgun at his girlfriend, Mary Waters, who was also his co-defendant in the corruption trial. Waters is also represented by Convertino, but she asked the court to make him her public defender and that motion was granted.
