Hoogendyk tries to get attention, still trails Levin

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.14.08 | 11:24 pm

While Jack Hoogendyk, R-Kalamazoo, continues to trail Michigan’s senior senator, Carl Levin, D-Detroit, in tracking polls, that is not stopping the firebrand conservative from making demands and showing up in unexpected places.

Hoogendyk released a video on his website on Friday asking his supporters to continue to “contact” Sen. Carl Levin and demand a “townhall style, prime time” debate between Levin and Hoogendyk. In the video, Hoogendyk outlines some of the items he has supported (such as right to work legislation) and says he wants the chance to explain why he voted against last year’s state budget. Hoogendyk is a term-limited state representative from Kalamazoo.

In the video Hoogendyk accused Levin of “increasing taxes & increasing taxes” and opposing “domestic oil production.” He also says Sen. Levin supports partial birth abortion.

Of interest with this video is that there is no documentation of either his own claims of his voting record or of Sen. Levin’s.

Hoogendyk also managed to make get some free media by attending a speech by Cindy McCain, the wife of Republican nominee for president Sen. John McCain of Arizona. Cindy spoke at the Oakland county Republican Lincoln Day dinner, and Hoogendyk managed to get himself quoted in both the Detroit Free Press and the Toledo Blade, where he is quoted as saying ”John McCain is the right man for these times.”

Todd, did you call Hoogendyk and ask for documentation?

And where's the “unexpected places” Hoogendyk showed up – certainly, you'd not find it unexpected he might show up at a McCain event, would you?

And why would Levin want to avoid a debate?
